Are Panic Attacks Destroying Your Life?

Panic attacks are unpredictable, sudden and repeated surges of overwhelming fear and anxiety. They usually come in waves of varying intensity. And almost all people who experience panic attacks feel trapped and unable to free themselves from anxiety.

Panic attacks have different effects

The effects of a panic attack are different from person to person. Some people pick up the phone and call 911 when it happens because they think they’re having a heart attack. Who wouldn’t, when everything in your body is telling you that you might pass out or dies soon if you don’t do something? Your heart starts pounding rapidly, you feel dizzy and light-headed, and the whole world is closing in on you. Yet, when you get to the hospital’s ER, the doctors tell you that it was no heart attack, your physical body is fine – it was only anxiety.

Many people who suffer from panic attacks and anxiety disorders also develop phobias, such as agoraphobia.

Agoraphobia – Fear of public places

Agoraphobia is defined as a strong and persistent fear of public places or open areas, in particular those from which escaping could be difficult. As a consequence, if you suffer from agoraphobia, you usually develop various, conscious or unconscious, “coping mechanism” or avoidant behaviors. Perhaps you make up reasons or excuse why you can’t go to certain places because you’re afraid it might trigger another panic attack.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) – How To Cure The Mental Hiccups

Saturday, October 10th, 2009

Many people who suffer form obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) says that it’s like having the “mental hiccups”. Your brain gets stuck in a repetitive pattern of thinking and acting, a vicious cycle, and it seems like there is no way to stop it.

Fear Of Germs Or Dirt

For example, you might constantly focus on fear of germs. If you have a fear of germs or dirt you might obsessively wash your hands many, many times each day, causing your skin to quickly dry out and perhaps even start to hurt. That’s a common example of an OCD behavior.

A doctor told one extreme version of the fear of germs to me. He said that one of his OCD-patients used to force her kids to take a bath whenever they came in from outside, even during winter.

History Of Treating OCD

In the past it was thought generally that OCD couldn’t be treated. Persons suffering from obsessive compulsive disorder had no choice but to go on suffering when years of psychotherapy had no positive impact on their condition. Today, thankfully, almost all people with OCD can be helped – and some even completely cured.

And one out of every 50 adults in the US suffers from OCD. And it is said to be the 4th most common mental disorder.

OCD – A Form Of Unhealthy Perfectionism

Obsessive compulsive disorder can also be seen as a sort of unhealthy perfectionism.

You might feel an uncontrollable urge to check and double-check your work, for example, for potential mistakes. Which if found out, you think, would make other people think less of you. You worry and look for errors and have a hard time relaxing.

Overcoming Panic Attacks, Anxiety Disorder And GAD

Friday, October 9th, 2009

Do you sometimes worry so much that it interferes with your daily activities? Are you haunted by fearful thoughts? Have you become so anxious that you can hardly remember your former self? Overwhelming worry is a common symptom of generalized anxiety disorder, also known as GAD.

When you suffer from generalized anxiety disorder it can feel difficult, or even impossible, not to worry all the time. Worry seems to follow you around like a mind virus. (“I wish I didn’t have to leave the house tonight.” “I can’t deal with going out tonight.” “What if I start feeling sick today as well?”)

Being easily startled, having a hard time falling or staying asleep may be other symptoms. As well as problems concentrating, feeling tense, restless and out of breath. Anxiety can also manifest itself in the form of headaches, nausea and excessively irritable.

Down Comforter Sets,

The signs and symptoms of general anxiety disorder tend to appear gradually over time. Usually it begins to make it first appearance sometime between childhood and middle age. But it can also happen at any time.

Some of the people who suffer from GAD can’t remember the last time they felt relaxed or at ease.

There are many different types of anxiety disorders. Generalized anxiety disorder is only one of them. Examples of others are obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), social anxiety disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder.

One distinction that can be useful to know is that anxiety disorders can occur on their own, without any other health concerns. It can of course also be a symptom of many health conditions, for example lung or heart disease. It can help you reduce or better manage the anxiety if you treat the underlying condition.

In the cases where anxiety is the primary issue, psychotherapy and medications can assist you making the stress more manageable. Antidepressants and anti-anxiety medication can also help you.

But if you don’t feel comfortable taking drugs and living with the side effects they may cause there is a completely natural, medication-free alternative to get rid of all of your anxiety, quickly and effectively…

That alternative is to use the One Move Technique taught by Joe Barry, creator of Panic Away, a program that has successfully helped over 34,000 people from 30 different countries end their anxiety for good. If you’re interested, check out this short Panic Away Review Video!

Social Phobia Test | Social Phobia, The Brain And Self-Perception

Are You Afraid Of Being Judged By Others?

Scientists have found that people who suffer from social phobia respond in a different way to negative comments about themselves, than other people do.

What characterizes this phobia is fearing and avoiding social situations, and fearing being judged negatively by other people, the authors say. It is without a doubt the most frequent anxiety disorder among the general population.

If you have social phobia there’s also a higher risk for depression and other forms of self-destructive behaviors. We need other people in order to feel good. We need a social network to function properly as human beings.

panic attack symptoms, overcoming anxiety

Studies have shown that persons with the phobia tend to have an increased emotional responsiveness to social interactions.

This research published in the Archives of General Psychiatry (Oct 2008) was done using brain imaging technology, also known as MRI.

A Proven Anxiety Cure - Over 40 000 People Says So!

How This Study Was Made

This study was carried out by doing fMRI-brain scans.

First they scanned the brains of 17 individuals who were socially phobic but wasn’t taking any medication. And then they compared those to an equal number of control subjects who were of the same age, sex and IQ, but who did not have any social phobia.

The brain scans were taken while the test subject read various statements – positive, negative or neutral. “You are lovely”, could be an example of positive statement. “You look awful” – negative. “You are human” – neutral. The statements could refer either to themselves or someone else, for example “She is beautiful”.

What Did The Results Show?

When people with social anxiety disorder (phobia) read negative comments about themselves you could see the blood flow to the amygdala and prefrontal cortex increase. These are parts of the brain that are associated with a person’s self-concept but also fear, fight-or-flight emotions and stress.

The authors’ conclusion was that the medial prefrontal cortex and amgydala, in connection with each other, might play a crucial role in the development of generalized social phobia.

So having a negative attitude toward yourself can contribute to social phobia.
