Scientists have found that people who suffer from social phobia respond in a different way to negative comments about themselves, than other people do.

What characterizes this phobia is fearing and avoiding social situations, and fearing being judged negatively by other people, the authors say. It is without a doubt the most frequent anxiety disorder among the general population.

If you have social phobia there’s also a higher risk for depression and other forms of self-destructive behaviors. We need other people in order to feel good. We need a social network to function properly as human beings.

Studies have shown that persons with the phobia tend to have an increased emotional responsiveness to social interactions.

This research published in the Archives of General Psychiatry (Oct 2008) was done using brain imaging technology, also known as MRI.

How This Study Was Made

This study was carried out by doing fMRI-brain scans.

First they scanned the brains of 17 individuals who were socially phobic but wasn’t taking any medication. And then they compared those to an equal number of control subjects who were of the same age, sex and IQ, but who did not have any social phobia.

The brain scans were taken while the test subject read various statements – positive, negative or neutral. “You are lovely”, could be an example of positive statement. “You look awful” – negative. “You are human” – neutral. The statements could refer either to themselves or someone else, for example “She is beautiful”.

What Did The Results Show?

When people with social anxiety disorder (phobia) read negative comments about themselves you could see the blood flow to the amygdala and prefrontal cortex increase. These are parts of the brain that are associated with a person’s self-concept but also fear, fight-or-flight emotions and stress.

The authors’ conclusion was that the medial prefrontal cortex and amgydala, in connection with each other, might play a crucial role in the development of generalized social phobia.

So having a negative attitude toward yourself can contribute to social phobia.

Change or Die on Amazon!Today, let’s start with a simple question: Why should you care about any of this? And why was the book Change or Die written?

Well, the book takes it’s start at a private conference at Rockefeller University, in Novemeber 2004, an elite medical research center in New York City.

The first topic they bring up for discussion at this conference is what to do about the growing crisis in health care (an industry that in the US alone consumes more than $2.1 trillion a year – that’s more than a sventh of the entire economy). Despite all of the spending in this area we are still not feeling any healthier. And we’re not making enough progress toward preventing the illnesses that kill us, such as heart disease, stroke and cancer. (For people suffering from panic attacks, the search for an anxiety cure often turns to the internet).

The dream team of experts that took the stage at Rockefeller University didn’t hold any long-awaited answers for how to solve this problem. As they spoke to this small group of insiders they were surpringly candid. They said the crisis in health care had not changed for decades. And no one in the medical establishment could figure out what to do about it.

Dr. Raphael “Ray” Levey, the man who founded the Global Medical Forum, told the audience:

“A relatively small precentage of the population consumes the vast majority of the health care budget for diseases that are very well known and by and large behavioral.” Which means, people are sick becuase of how they choose to live their lives, not because of factors that are beyond their control, such as the genes they were born with.

Levey continued by saying that: “Even as far back as when I was in medical school [back in 1955] many articles demonstrated that 80% of the health care budget was consumed by five behavioral issues“:

2. Too much drinking.

3. Too much eating.

4. Too much stress, and

5. Not enough exercise.

And this is a major reason why learning how behavior change works is so important to your physcial, mental and emotional health and well being. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, or OCD, is often thought to be a disease in and of itself. However, to better understand how to overcome OCD naturally, it is essential to recognize the disorder as a sub-type of anxiety. OCD is a cognitive disease, meaning it exists within the mind; therefore, the importance of understanding the disease cannot be overstated. Once you understand the disease, you begin to change the way you look at it, and thus handle it differently. Fear is not a bad thing if you can learn to control how you respond to it.

Even if the people around you do not recognize your symptoms, most people with OCD know when the ritual is happening. So, try to change your mindset, and see the urge as a challenge. Maybe tell yourself that you need more adventure in your life anyway, so when the urge hits, make yourself do absolutely nothing for 10 minutes. Each time, delay the reaction longer and longer, until your brain begins to process that nothing happens when the ritual is not performed.

Studies appear to show that overcoming OCD naturally is all about exposure and response prevention. If you cannot make yourself believe the danger is not real, then changing the way you perceive the danger can be key. Remember, you are not stuck in a flight response, but one of prevention. So, harness that knowledge and see the fear as a challenge to be overcome. When the fear does not materialize every time it is challenged, you are on your way to overcoming OCD without medication.

Things to Avoid With OCD

OCD can be a debilitating condition to have to live with. I’m a great believer in doing things, even little things, that make life a bit easier. Here are just a few things to avoid with OCD and hopefully help make someone’s life a tad less difficult.

· Using alcohol or other drugs – Drugs and alcohol initially make the sufferer’s need for control and order dissipate. A measure of relief is then felt. However, once the sufferer has sobered up, the guilt of having been out of control and/or any guilt over actions while “under the influence” causes the victim to counteract their feelings of shame and embarrassment, compulsive actions are often increased in an attempt to flush them out.

· Trying to control things that can’t – control what you can and let the rest take care of itself. This can be hard, but it can relieve the pressure of solving all of life’s problems. Alcoholics often recite what is called The Serenity Prayer – I think it applies for sufferers of OCD. A link is posted below.

· Do not cut yourself off – you need the support of your friends and family to deal with OCD. While there are a great many of support groups on the Internet, it is much more advisable to find one in your local community to benefit from personal interaction.

· Blaming yourself for your OCD – are you harder on yourself than you would be with a friend who had this illness? Practice being kind to yourself. Stop feeling ashamed for having a disorder that isn’t a weakness, but as true and real as having a Heart condition.

· Ignoring problems – they aren’t going anywhere and will only return stronger. Tackle problems one at a time. “Baby-step” if you have to, but do not stick you head in the sand.
