The Big Secret To Overcoming Public Speaking Panic Attacks Easily

Sunday, November 1st, 2009

Most people who have never done public speaking are deathly afraid of it. If someone close to them died, they would rather change places with the corpse in the casket than give a talk in front of the crowd at a funeral. The fear is so strong that if they are talking into a microphone, with just one person listening, the thought that millions of people might hear the recording later sends chills down their spine and makes them uncomfortable. The fear of public speaking is in itself a kind of phobia, which is closely related to feelings of anxiety and panic attacks. The reason for this is simple, high levels of anxiety is what triggers panic attacks to occur.

For some people even a meeting at the office is too much to bear. And having to face group people at their annual assessment turns out to be a killer for their careers. These people have no problem with meetings as long as they’re not required to speak or be the center of attention. If they are called on to speak they experience a sudden feeling of anxiety which is the beginning of a panic attack that may cause them to stutter and in rare cases even become unable to speak one word. This is not the same as the fear of speaking in front of groups. Rather it’s a fear of screwing up or doing something wrong in front of your co-workers.

Panic attacks and a phobia for public speaking can create unbalance in your life, how much depends on their level of intensity. The first step toward solving this problem is to realize that this will not change overnight. You must be willing to put forth focus and persistence to see lasting improvements. You must also take a pro-active approach. Meaning that you don’t start looking for a cure to public speaking anxiety a couple of days before big talk. That strategy won’t work. The key here is self-confidence. The only reason you fear public speaking is because your focus is on what you do not want, to fail. Building your self-confidence is the best way to eliminating this fear.

The fact is that it’s exceptionally easy to get rid of the fear of public speaking. We humans love to make things infinitely more complicated than they need to be, by constantly avoiding what we’re afraid of instead of facing it, head-on. Look at anyone who is terrified of speaking in front of groups or in public and you will see it happening. They’ll do everything in their power to not have to do it. They’ll do any and everything they can to get out of it or avoid it. Self-confidence really comes from doing what you’re afraid of, even though it scares you. That builds self-confidence and courage like nothing else.

The feelings you now label as fear and anxiety can actually be converted into a trigger of powerful and motivating excitement. Use the increased activity level in your body to fuel your speech instead of letting it shut you down. Express, rather than suppress. In its most raw form fear is nothing but energy. Use it, as a “call to action” that it’s time for you to step up and do whatever it is your afraid of. Give it a new meaning that “Now, is time for me to act and perform, to speak, to the best of my ability. That’s all any of us can do. It’s not about perfection, it’s about progress. So let’s go!”

The key to everything, really, is how you focus your mind. Focus on what you want and keep it off of what you don’t want. That is really the essence of what you must do to resolve this. And take action now, regardless of the fear. Here’s a video on how you can get started immediately: End Anxiety Therapy Today!

Anxiety Cure – Change or Die, Book Review Part 1

A Proven Anxiety Cure - Over 40 000 People Says So!

If you are looking for an anxiety cure to help you overcome panic attacks and returning to normal everyday living, you need to start with a crash course in behavioral change.

We can call this class, Behavior Change 101.

In this and in coming posts I’m going to review of some of the key concepts in the amazing book “Change or Die” (2008) by Alan Deutschman. I will review the 3 keys to change, that are covered in the book, and specifically, how they relate to people suffering from panic attacks and anxiety disorders. They are in their own way a form of anxiety cure. And also look at why the common approach of trying to use Facts, Fear or Force (the three F’s) to motivate people to change doesn’t work!

I think you will find all of this VERY interesting…

Change or Die on Amazon!Today, let’s start with a simple question: Why should you care about any of this? And why was the book Change or Die written?

Well, the book takes it’s start at a private conference at Rockefeller University, in Novemeber 2004, an elite medical research center in New York City.

The first topic they bring up for discussion at this conference is what to do about the growing crisis in health care (an industry that in the US alone consumes more than $2.1 trillion a year – that’s more than a sventh of the entire economy). Despite all of the spending in this area we are still not feeling any healthier. And we’re not making enough progress toward preventing the illnesses that kill us, such as heart disease, stroke and cancer. (For people suffering from panic attacks, the search for an anxiety cure often turns to the internet).

The dream team of experts that took the stage at Rockefeller University didn’t hold any long-awaited answers for how to solve this problem. As they spoke to this small group of insiders they were surpringly candid. They said the crisis in health care had not changed for decades. And no one in the medical establishment could figure out what to do about it.

Dr. Raphael “Ray” Levey, the man who founded the Global Medical Forum, told the audience:

“A relatively small precentage of the population consumes the vast majority of the health care budget for diseases that are very well known and by and large behavioral.” Which means, people are sick becuase of how they choose to live their lives, not because of factors that are beyond their control, such as the genes they were born with.

Levey continued by saying that: “Even as far back as when I was in medical school [back in 1955] many articles demonstrated that 80% of the health care budget was consumed by five behavioral issues“:

1. Too much smoking

2. Too much drinking.

3. Too much eating.

4. Too much stress, and

5. Not enough exercise.

And this is a major reason why learning how behavior change works is so important to your physcial, mental and emotional health and well being. And how it can help you if your looking to find an anxiety cure, start first by looking at your patterns of thought, feeling and behavior. And how these create virtually every thing in your life.

What provoked Alan Deutschman to write the book “Change or Die”?

Well, before I tell you. Ask yourself this question: What if you were given the choice to change or die? For real. We are talking actual life and death here. What if a well educated and informed authority, such as a doctor told you that you had to make enduring change in the way you think, feel and act – could you do it? And that if you didn’t your time on this earth would soon end, a lot sooner than it otherwise had to. Could you really change then, when change mattered most?

Yes, you say? Try again. Yes? Don’t bet on it.

That’s what the experts say. The expert say that you wouldn’t. You don’t believe me, you want odds? The odds that experts are laying down – the scientifically studided odds – are: Nine to one. That’s nine to one against you, not for you. The experts say 90% of people don’t change.

How do you like them odds?

In the next couple of posts, we’ll look at how you can turn all this around by learning what actually works when it comes to creating postive lasting change in your life.

No matter what challenges you are facing, be it anxiety, panic attacks or anything else. The 3 keys to change will apply, as you will learn more about shortly…

Talk soon,

David Jackson
